Wasena Park — Roanoke River's Urban Playground

Before 2019, Wasena Park was where you brought a picnic blanket and watched the Roanoke River slide past. After 2019, you bring a kayak. The whitewater features dropped into the river bend that year turned the 41-acre park into an urban paddling run — rapids you can reach on foot from downtown in fifteen minutes along the greenway. The neighborhood that holds it takes its name from a Native American word meaning "beautiful view." Annexed into the city in 1919, Wasena filled in through the 1920s and 1950s with Craftsman bungalows and American Foursquares — houses that climb the hillsides toward the park. The structures earned the neighborhood a National Register listing in 2012. The park keeps remaking what it offers. Summer weekends now belong to tube floats and kayak runs. The hillside playground does the work for families who come without boats. Dog walkers share the grass with river runners staging gear. Roanoke built itself as a railroad town in the 1880s, swelling from a village called Big Lick into a city that became Southwest Virginia's hub. A century later, when manufacturing left, the river and the mountains became what the city sold. Wasena Park sits where that pivot shows — whitewater you can paddle between shifts, a greenway that stitches the water back into daily movement. Free parking off Wiley Drive.
