Louisiana Children's Museum

In 2019, the Louisiana Children's Museum left the Warehouse District for an 8.5-acre campus in City Park and became something unusual: a children's museum where half the experience is outdoors. It was one of the first in the United States designed this way. Kids move through a miniature Louisiana landscape — cypress swamp, marsh, river delta — built at child scale. Not dioramas. Not exhibits about wetlands. Climbable, walkable terrain that mirrors the state's actual geography. The water play areas connect to the park lagoons. There's a working mini-grocery and a music room. What makes this place work is its organizing principle. Most children's museums are built around concepts — movement, sound, pretend play. This one is built around a place. New Orleans sits where the Mississippi River deposited silt for centuries, creating the delta. Native Americans used the portage between Bayou St. John and the river as a trade route for over a thousand years. The French founded the city in 1718 on relatively high ground along a sharp bend in the flood-prone river, choosing the site because it controlled access to the entire Mississippi River Valley. That landscape — cypress, marsh, delta, river — is what shaped the city. Here it's scaled down and handed to children as something to explore on their hands and knees. Open Tuesday through Saturday 9:30am to 4:30pm, Sunday 11am to 4:30pm. Admission charged. 15 Henry Thomas Drive, City Park.
