The Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge

A bridge across Biloxi Bay does the work a bridge is supposed to do — it connects — but here the connection spans a divide that runs deeper than water. On the west: casino Biloxi, rebuilt after Katrina as a destination of poolside towers and resort gaming. On the east: Ocean Springs, settled by the French in 1699 as Fort Maurepas, the first capital of French Louisiana, and still holding the cadence of an artist colony. The divide is cultural, a matter of what each side values, and the bridge has always been the thing that made it possible to move between them without pretending they're the same place. Katrina dropped the 1962 bridge into the bay in 2005. The replacement, finished in 2007, rises high enough that the view eastbound becomes panoramic — the full curve of the bay, the barrier islands scattered south into the Gulf, the skylines of both towns laid out as evidence of what each chose to rebuild. On the Ocean Springs side, a 120-foot mosaic mural runs along the approach, the longest in Mississippi, depicting Gulf Coast landscapes in tile and grout. The mural is a marker, a territorial claim: you are entering a town that cares about such things. The reason to cross is the same reason people have always crossed — to get from one kind of place to another, and to see what that difference looks like from the middle.
