LSU Museum of Art — Shaw Center for the Arts

The only dedicated art museum in Baton Rouge occupies thirteen thousand square feet of gallery space in the Shaw Center for the Arts at 100 Lafayette Street, overlooking the Mississippi River. The museum traces to 1959 and moved to this building when the Shaw Center opened in 2005. The structure's skin is translucent channel glass manufactured in Germany by Glasfabrik Lamberts—a design that won the American Institute of Architects National Honor Award in 2008 and the AIA Gulf States Honor Award in 2005 for what jurors called its "aggressive concept with a good contrast of materials" and "effective mapping of façade upon the plaza." The collection includes the largest assemblage of Newcomb Pottery in the United States. The 125,000-square-foot Shaw Center was built with both public and private funding. Major donors included the Shaw Group, which received naming rights, the Manship families, the Pennington families, and Lamar Advertising, based in Baton Rouge. The building holds not only the LSU Museum of Art but also the LSU School of Art's Glassell Gallery, the 325-seat Manship Theatre, classrooms, and Tsunami, a rooftop sushi restaurant. First Sunday of every month is free. Otherwise adults pay five dollars; students, children twelve and under, veterans, and educators enter free. Open Tuesday through Saturday ten to five, Thursday until eight, Sunday one to five. Closed Mondays.
