Marrero

Louis H. Marrero gave land for a church, a school, and a cemetery — the three anchors that turn a cane field into a place with a name. What grew around that donation is now the largest unincorporated community on the West Bank, 33,000 people with no mayor and no town council, governed directly by Jefferson Parish. Barataria Boulevard runs through as the commercial spine, strip malls and medical offices stretching south from the river. West Jefferson Medical Center sits here, the major hospital for the lower West Bank. The community never incorporated, never drew a formal boundary, never quite settled the question of what it is — suburb or country town, Jefferson Parish or something looser. It occupies the transition zone between the developed crescent near the river and the bayou parishes that begin where the pavement ends. South of Marrero, past Estelle, the marsh opens up. Here, the edge is still negotiable.
