Read Mountain Preserve — The Quiet Ridgeline

The summit ridge at Read Mountain Preserve offers something McAfee Knob cannot: silence. While the Triple Crown hikes draw weekend convoys to their Instagram overlooks, this 1,600-acre tract on the eastern rim of the Roanoke Valley remains the quiet alternative — moderate trails through mixed hardwood forest, no parking lot overflow, no line for the money shot. The preserve spans the ridgeline that defines the valley's eastern wall. From the summit ridge, views open north toward Carvins Cove and south across the Roanoke Valley itself — the rail-built basin that turned Big Lick into a city when the Norfolk and Western Railway staked its headquarters here in 1882. What you're seeing from this elevation is the geography that made Roanoke possible: a valley floor wide enough for rail yards, flanked by the Blue Ridge folds that now define the region's second act as an outdoor recreation hub. Wildflowers peak in late April along the forest floor. Multiple trailheads on the eastern Roanoke County side offer free access.
