Vinton Historic Downtown

Ten minutes east of downtown Roanoke, the Town of Vinton chose a different trajectory than the railroad city that exploded next door. When Norfolk and Western made Roanoke its headquarters in 1882, Vinton stayed Vinton — 8,000 people, a farmers market running Saturdays from April through October, and the kind of downtown where the War Memorial built in 1948 still serves as gymnasium, community center, and veterans tribute all at once. The annual Dogwood Festival has run every spring since 1955. The Roanoke River Blueway cuts through town with put-ins for kayaking and tubing — the same river that gave Roanoke its name, though the actual Native American word came from 300 miles east, where shell beads were currency and the river met the Atlantic. Here it's just water you can paddle, in a town that never became a boomtown.
