Rincón Lighthouse (Punta Higüero Lighthouse)

The original lighthouse here dates to 1892, built by the Spanish government with an elaborate Mediterranean design — exposed and indented brickwork around the doors and windows, reddish stucco imitating stonework, a parapet in lace-like brick. The 1918 earthquake destroyed it. The United States Coast Guard commissioned a replacement on January 12, 1922. The town of Rincón built a park around the surviving tower — a free, open-air perch above the Mona Passage, where humpback whales migrate from January through March and surfers work the breaks below.
