Film New Orleans — Hollywood South

Louisiana passed film tax credits in 2002. The city logged more production days than anywhere outside LA and New York for most of the last decade. The credits have been reduced multiple times, but the infrastructure stuck — soundstages, crews, gear houses, the muscle memory of making things at scale. NCIS: New Orleans shot here. So did Cloak & Dagger and Queen Sugar. The city became a standing set, flexible enough to play itself or somewhere else entirely. Streets close without warning. A coffee shop repaints overnight — cream to brick red, new sign, period awning. If you see that, a crew is almost certainly shooting nearby. Films produced in and around the city include Ray, The Pelican Brief, All the King's Men, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 12 Years a Slave, and Project Power. In 2006, work began on the Louisiana Film & Television studio complex in the Tremé neighborhood. A year later, Louisiana extended similar tax incentives to music and theater productions — commentators began calling New Orleans "Broadway South." The city's wrought iron and shotgun houses and oak canopies photograph well, but so does its infrastructure — the layout is legible, the permits move, the locals are used to it. Hollywood South wasn't a marketing line. It was a description of capacity. New Orleans has increasingly been known by that nickname due to its prominent role in the film industry and in pop culture.
