Fishbone Alley — Gulfport Public Art

A narrow alley in downtown Gulfport, barely wide enough for two people to pass, became an evolving public art installation after Katrina. Murals, mosaics, sculptures, painted utility boxes — the space between 25th and 26th Avenues is packed with work that changes while the alley stays the same. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been reshaped by catastrophe before. Hurricane Camille in 1969. Katrina in 2005. Fishbone Alley started as a post-Katrina revitalization project and became one of the most photographed spots on the coast. It's free, it's always open, and it proves that making things for their own sake still happens here. The French settlers who built Fort Maurepas in 1699 found the coast difficult — crops died, water was scarce, illness spread. When the capital of French Louisiana moved to Mobile in 1701, the fort was abandoned by 1702. Two hundred years later, the coast became a tourist draw, a gambling destination marketed as an alternative to Florida. Legal gaming arrived in the early 1990s, and Vegas-style casinos and condo towers followed. The Coast has always rebuilt. Fishbone Alley is what revitalization looks like when artists do it: a service corridor turned into proof that the work continues.
