W.J. Quarles House (Greenvale) — Long Beach

National Register of Historic Places

A rural school teacher from Tennessee built this house in Long Beach in 1892 — wood frame, clapboard, two stories, five bays across the front. William James Quarles had settled here eight years earlier and lived in a smaller house on the property while the new one went up. When it was finished, he stayed until 1924. The structure sat on brick piers with one interior chimney, two rooms deep. Hurricane Camille tore through in 1969 and left the house badly damaged. It sat vacant and sealed for decades. By 2003, the Mississippi Heritage Trust named it one of the ten most endangered historic places in the state. The land it occupied was valuable — commercial development wanted it. The owner asked the keeper of the National Register to approve moving the structure roughly 400 feet northeast, closer to the Quarles Family Cemetery. Permission came through in 2012. The house was relocated and restoration began, aimed at historical accuracy. The house had been listed on the National Register in 1980. In 2012, the same year it was moved, it became a Mississippi Landmark. The cottage that once stood beside it — part of the original 1884 house where the family lived during construction — was torn down in the 1930s. What survived is the 1892 building itself: Greenvale, on East Old Pass Road, still a private residence, still visible from the road.
