Porta Coeli Museum, San Germán

The Dominican Order built the Convent of Porta Coeli at the crest of a hill in San Germán in 1609. The church structure that stands today dates to 1692. In 1949, the church was sold to the Puerto Rican government for a dollar to ensure its preservation. Restored by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, it opened in 1960 as the Religious Art Museum of Porta Coeli — the first of its kind on the island — housing paintings and wooden carvings from the 18th and 19th centuries, including Baroque-style altarpieces and a Black Virgin of Montserrat statuette.
