Rhode Island State House

Rhode Island was the first colony to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown, and the building it eventually raised to house that independent spirit matches the ambition. Designed by McKim, Mead & White and built between 1895 and 1904 of white Georgia marble, the State House carries the fourth largest self-supported marble dome in the world, topped by an 11-foot gilded bronze statue known as The Independent Man. Inside, the original 1663 Royal Charter is on permanent display. Free and open weekdays.
