Rebel State Historic Site grew from a single grave. In 1962 a farmer near Marthaville found the remains of an unknown Confederate soldier on his land, reburied him on a pine bluff above Bayou Pierre, and the state built a small museum and music hall around the spot. The grounds now hold the Louisiana Country Music Museum, a tribute to the fiddlers and gospel singers of the piney woods, and trails through hardwood that drops down to the creek bottom.
