Gallier Hall

National Historic Landmark

James Gallier Sr. designed Gallier Hall as the civic showpiece of the American sector, built to rival the Cabildo. Construction began in 1845. The building was dedicated on 10 May 1853 — a three-story marble structure fronted by two rows of fluted Ionic columns. One of the most important structures built during the antebellum period of the city, it served as New Orleans City Hall from 1853 to 1957. Many important events during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the era of Louisiana governor Huey Long took place here. Jefferson Davis's body lay in state here in 1889. After City Hall moved to Duncan Plaza in the 1950s, Gallier Hall kept its ceremonial role. The remains of particularly distinguished citizens sometimes lie in state here following their death. The building serves as the venue for mayoral inaugurations and other civic functions. It is the ceremonial heart of Mardi Gras. Viewing galleries in front of the hall are reserved for Mardi Gras royalty. Parades on the St. Charles route pause here. Marching bands perform shows. On Mardi Gras Day the mayor of New Orleans toasts the kings of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club and Rex Parade from the balcony. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. It now operates as a convention center and reception hall.
