Mid-City Lanes Rock 'n Bowl

The bowling alley opened in 1941. For forty years, it was just lanes. Then in the 1980s, someone decided to bring in live music. Now it's the only place in the world where you can bowl a strike during a live zydeco set. New Orleans has always been a place where cultures collide and produce something that doesn't exist anywhere else. The French founded the city in 1718 at a bend in the Mississippi, near the portage route between the river and Lake Pontchartrain. It became the largest port in the South, exporting cotton and farm products, drawing workers and music from across the Gulf and Caribbean. After the Civil War, after Reconstruction, after Jim Crow, after integration, after Katrina — the city kept making new forms out of old roots. Mid-City Lanes Rock 'n Bowl is a small, specific example of that refusal to keep things in their lanes. Thursday zydeco nights pack the dance floor by 9pm. Buckwheat Zydeco, Tab Benoit, and other Louisiana legends have played regular sets here. The current location on South Carrollton has 18 lanes, a full bar, and a dance floor. Zydeco, R&B, swing, and brass bands rotate through the week. You can check the schedule before you go, but the point is not the headliner. The point is standing on lacquered wood while an accordion player works through a two-step and someone three lanes over picks up the seven-ten split. The genres that built this city don't need a proper stage. They just need people willing to dance while they bowl.
