Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery & Aquarium

The only federal fish hatchery in Louisiana opened in 1931 along the Cane River with a Depression-era mission: stock catfish and bass for farmers who needed affordable protein. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has operated it since the beginning. What changed was the work. The hatchery now focuses on species recovery—Louisiana pearlshell mussels, alligator snapping turtles, Gulf striped bass, paddlefish. The facility handles six species of fish plus the turtle and the mussel across 53 ponds, each approximately 0.8 acres. Paddlefish are spawned and raised here until they reach six to ten inches, then released. The hatchery is working to restore the historical range and population levels of striped bass, and developing spawning and culture techniques for pallid sturgeon—workers hope to raise enough to take the species off the Endangered Species List. The hatchery raises over one million largemouth bass every year. The aquarium features sixteen tanks of native fish organized by Southeastern river habitats. The Harold B. Wales Environmental Education Classroom seats 32 students and has 16 student-grade dissecting microscopes, serving kindergarten through twelfth grade and teacher workshops. Outside, a Caddo memorial plaza honors the indigenous people who lived and were buried on this land. Admission is free. The aquarium is open daily 8am–3pm; the hatchery grounds are open Monday through Thursday 8am–3pm. You're watching live recovery work—paddlefish fingerlings in tanks, mussels in quiet trays, the mechanics of bringing species back from the edge.
