Cradle of Forestry in America

The first school of professional forestry in the United States opened here in Pisgah Forest in 1898. Congress designated the site in 1968. Today the 6,500-acre tract holds a Forest Discovery Center, three paved trails through historic buildings from the Biltmore Forest School era, and a 1914 Climax logging locomotive. The trails are paved; the history is not softened. This is where American forestry learned to put forests back together.
