Wise Man Brewing

The address — 826 Angelo Bros. Ave — tells you where Winston-Salem keeps putting its bets. Industry Hill is the old warehouse district, the city's industrial bones repurposed for what comes next. Wise Man Brewing landed here and stayed.

Winston-Salem was built on manufacturing at scale. Tobacco made this city; R.J. Reynolds and Camel cigarettes are woven into its origin story, as are the textile operations that followed. The twin towns of Winston and Salem merged in 1913, and the industrial infrastructure they left behind is now the raw material for a different kind of economy. Wise Man is part of that answer.

The brewery keeps it plain on purpose: four ingredients, an ever-changing lineup, a taproom that opens early most days and runs late on weekends. Fridays and Saturdays go until midnight. Monday is the exception — doors open at four in the afternoon. The philosophy gets stated as simply as the hours: "Make the beer you wish to see in the world." That's the whole manifesto.

The Untappd record shows the range — Italian pilsners, hazy IPAs, gose, something called Soul Refreshment — the kind of roster that suggests a brewery still genuinely curious about what it can make, not one that found a flagship and stopped there. The spirit, as they put it, is discovery and innovation carried forward from homebrewing days.

Go on a Thursday or Friday. The room has time to become something when the hours stretch out. The beer is distributed across the state, which means you can find it elsewhere — but the taproom on Angelo Brothers Avenue is where the story started, and that's still the right place to drink it.
