Milton Joyce opened the Oriental in 1880; Lou Rickabaugh ran the gaming concession. In January 1881, Wyatt Earp took a one-quarter interest in the faro operation as manager and enforcer, and brought Bat Masterson in to help run the tables. The place burned in the 1881 fire — Joyce couldn't save anything — but the building owners, Vizina and Cook, rebuilt fast. It still stands on Allen Street. Ghost-tour operators will tell you some of the original clientele never left.
