Fredericksburg Historic District

On May 8, 1846, 120 German immigrants founded Fredericksburg — and what they built has largely survived. The historic district, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, contains over 700 historically significant structures. Several houses survive from the 1840s; limestone became the dominant building material for both commercial and residential construction. Look for the Sunday Houses — small townhouses outlying farmers kept in town for weekend church visits — and streets wide enough, local tradition holds, for a full team of oxen to turn around.
