Flagler's Legacy Trail (Florida East Coast Railway Corridor)

Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway reached St. Augustine in 1885, and the city was never the same. That rail connection made St. Augustine the first of the Gilded Age Florida resort destinations — the original proving ground for the idea that a wealthy American could winter somewhere warm and get there in reasonable comfort. The depot building survives as a transportation heritage landmark, the most tangible evidence of how a single rail line remade a city that had been standing for three centuries before the first train arrived.
