Jemez Historic Site (Giusewa Pueblo and Mission)

The Pueblo of Giusewa was established among the hot springs of Jemez Valley around AD 1350. By 1621, Franciscan missionaries and their Jemez converts had built the San José de los Jémez Mission — Western Baroque in style, with eight-foot-thick stone walls. The missionary effort failed. The Jemez joined the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and the Spanish were gone from northern New Mexico for the next twelve years. The stone walls remain. The heritage center tells the story in the words of the Jemez people themselves.
