Belcourt of Newport

Richard Morris Hunt built it for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont between 1891 and 1895, modeled on the hunting lodge Louis XIII built at Versailles — and Belmont arranged the ground floor to house his horses and carriages, his own quarters above. In 1896 he gave the house to his new wife, the former Alva Vanderbilt, who rearranged it for entertaining and later used it as a base for her women's suffrage work. A restoration begun in 2012 brought it back; guided tours run Fridays through Sundays.
