Old Whaling Station Adobe (Monterey)

The walk leading to this 1847 adobe tells you everything: it's paved with whale vertebrae. Built as a private residence, the building became headquarters for the Old Monterey Whaling Company in 1855, when shore whaling operations ran on the nearby beach. The whalebone walkway remains. Now part of Monterey State Historic Park, the adobe holds that history underfoot — literally — before you've crossed the threshold.
