Sentry Box

Built in 1786 for General George Weedon, a Continental Army officer who went on to serve as mayor of Fredericksburg, the Sentry Box is a two-story, five-bay Georgian frame dwelling on Caroline Street — an elegant specimen of late Georgian architecture, as the Virginia Department of Historic Resources describes it, highlighted by a finely detailed porch. The house carries Colonial Revival and Greek Revival-style details alongside its Georgian bones, with a central-passage plan and side gable roof. In the yard stands an 18th-century icehouse, still on the property.

Weedon named the house after his military service — nostalgia for the years spent at his post. During the Yorktown campaign, he and his Virginia troops held Lord Cornwallis in check at Gloucester Point. The war over, he came home to Fredericksburg and built something that would last.

The Sentry Box sits in a city that had skin in nearly every fight that shaped this country. Fredericksburg was a prominent colonial port where the Rappahannock crossed the fall line, home to prominent families during the Revolution, and then positioned almost exactly between the opposing capitals during the Civil War — close enough that the ground itself became contested. The Sentry Box predates all of that carnage, built in the years when men like Weedon were still making sense of what they'd survived and won.

Weedon and his wife befriended the family of his brother-in-law General Hugh Mercer, and invited them to live at the Sentry Box. The house became both a home and a kind of remembrance. They eventually left the property to the Mercers. The grounds later saw considerable Civil War activity.

The Virginia Landmarks Register listed it in 1990; the National Register of Historic Places followed in 1992. It remains part of the Fredericksburg Historic District.
