Honanki Heritage Site

Between AD 1150 and 1350, the Sinagua — ancestors of the Hopi — built their largest cliff dwellings in Red Rock country here, alongside what is now Palatki. Smithsonian archaeologist Jesse Walter Fewkes first described the site and gave it its Hopi name: Honanki, meaning "badger house." The Hopi, notably, had no specific name for it. The site holds an estimated 72 rooms. It runs on a self-guided trail, no reservation required — just a Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful Pass.
