Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Central

Public library service here traces to 1823, when the Albemarle Library Society first opened — and closed eleven years later. Paul Goodloe McIntire's donation in 1919 restarted it; the first municipal library followed in 1921. In 1934, the Colored Branch at Jefferson School opened as the system's first branch, serving Black readers that the main library would not. The libraries integrated in 1948. The regional system formed in 1972, eventually growing to one central library and seven branches across five jurisdictions.
