Carter's Mountain (Carter Overlook)

The mountain rising southeast of Charlottesville has carried one name since 1730, when Secretary John Carter obtained a patent for 9,350 acres here. It sits in Albemarle County's Southwest Mountains, and the best way up is the Saunders-Monticello Trail, which puts you at the Carter Overlook near the summit — looking back at a city that has grown considerably since Carter first claimed this ground.
