Cape Playhouse, Dennis

Raymond Moore took a Unitarian meetinghouse built in 1838, moved it to a plot of land in Dennis, and opened it as a theater in 1927 — its first production starred Basil Rathbone. That building has run every summer since, except for a three-year pause during World War II and a single season lost to COVID-19. It is widely considered the longest continuously operating summer theater in America. A young Bette Davis worked here as an usher. The place earns its reputation the old-fashioned way: by staying open.
