Pactola Reservoir

Beneath Pactola Reservoir, a mining town called Pactola sits submerged — most of its buildings demolished before the dam went up, with the old Civilian Conservation Corps dynamite bunker still down there in the depths. The dam was built in 1952 to supply Rapid City with water, and the reservoir that filled behind it became the largest and deepest in the Black Hills: 800 acres, 150 feet at its deepest, 14 miles of shoreline. Record lake trout come out of here every year. Scuba divers still go down looking for what's left of the town.
