Roughlock Falls

The name comes from the wagons. Pioneers descending Spearfish Canyon used to roughlock their wheels — locking them to prevent free rolling — to survive the drop. The falls kept the name. Multi-tiered and fed by Little Spearfish Creek, they sit within the Black Hills National Forest in Lawrence County, managed by South Dakota's Department of Game, Fish, and Parks. The trail out and back runs two miles and is considered easy. Come for the falls; stay to watch for the American dipper, a bird that walks and swims underwater.
