Rapid City Main Street Square

Downtown Rapid City's central plaza sits on land the city rebuilt after a catastrophic flood along Rapid Creek reshaped the floodplain into public space. The Square runs programming through every season — an interactive fountain in summer, outdoor skating in winter — and anchors a downtown where the work of keeping a small city alive happens in the open. Sculptures dotting the grounds interpret the landscape of the Badlands and Black Hills through wind and water themes. Come on a Thursday in summer; that's when the city tends to show up.
