Black Butte

West of Sisters, Black Butte rises to 6,436 feet in the kind of symmetrical silhouette that makes a cinder cone look almost deliberate. In summer, the trail to the summit is a family affair — toddlers included. In winter, with serious snow, it becomes something closer to a real mountain objective. The Mouth of the Metolius springs up at its western base. That alone is worth the drive.
