East Lake

East Lake sits inside the caldera of Newberry Volcano, a geothermal lake separated from neighboring Paulina Lake by a rhyolite dome. The shoreline runs hot springs into cold water, which does something useful for the fish: Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Kokanee thrive here, and the resort on the shore has been pulling anglers in since before World War II. The record Brown Trout — 22½ pounds, mounted in the General Store — is reason enough to make the drive.
