Stephens-Lee High School / Community Center

What stands at 30 George Washington Carver Avenue is what was saved, not what was built. Edward S. Stephens organized Asheville's early Black schools and served as the first general secretary of the Young Men's Institute before losing both positions and leaving the city. Decades later, a high school bore his name. The main building is gone. Alumni held onto the gym wing. It operates now as a community center, with the Stephens-Lee Heritage Hall museum inside and an HMDB marker outside.
